You Must Be Born Again

“Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, ‘Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs You are doing if God were not with Him.’

Jesus replied, ‘Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.’

‘How can someone be born when they are old?’ Nicodemus asked. ‘Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!’

Jesus answered, ‘Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at My saying, “You must be born again.”‘

As we continue our journey through The Shepherd’s Mandate, we arrive at one of the most profound conversations recorded in Scripture.

It is a conversation between Jesus and a man named Nicodemus.

Nicodemus was not an unbeliever in the ordinary sense.

He believed in God.

He knew the Scriptures.

He prayed.

He fasted.

He belonged to the religious leadership of Israel.

By every outward measure, he was a deeply religious man.

Yet Jesus immediately spoke to him about something he did not possess.

A new birth.

This should cause every one of us to pause.

If a man like Nicodemus needed to be born again, then every one of us needs the same miracle.

Nicodemus misunderstood Jesus.

He thought Jesus was speaking about physical birth.

But Jesus was speaking about spiritual birth.

Every human being is born physically.

Yet because of sin, every human being is spiritually separated from God.

No amount of effort can overcome that separation.

No amount of education can remove it.

No amount of religious activity can erase it.

Only God can give spiritual life.

Jesus says:

“Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.”

This is the work of the Holy Spirit.

The new birth is not something we achieve.

It is something God graciously accomplishes in us, bringing us to repentance and faith in the Gospel.

Nicodemus reminds us that a person can know much about religion without truly knowing Christ.

He knew the Law.

He studied the Scriptures.

He held a respected position.

Yet Jesus did not tell him to become a better Pharisee.

He told him he must be born again.

This is a lesson every generation of Christians must remember.

It is possible to grow up in a Christian home.

To attend church faithfully.

To know Christian vocabulary.

To participate in worship.

And yet never experience the transforming work of the Holy Spirit.

The Gospel is not merely about improving our lives.

It is about receiving new life from God.

When God gives a person a new heart, everything begins to change.

Not overnight into perfection.

But genuinely.

The love of sin begins to lose its grip.

The love of Christ begins to grow.

Prayer becomes more than a duty.

The Scriptures become more than a book.

Obedience becomes an expression of love rather than mere obligation.

There is a growing desire to please God.

A growing sorrow over sin.

A growing joy in Christ.

These are not the cause of the new birth.

They are its fruit.

Just as a living tree produces fruit, the believer who has been born of the Spirit begins to display the fruit of a transformed life.

Jesus compares the Holy Spirit to the wind.

“You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going.”

No one can control the wind.

No one can command it.

Yet we see its effects.

Leaves move.

Trees bend.

The air changes.

The same is true of the Holy Spirit.

We cannot manufacture spiritual life.

But we can see the evidence when God transforms a person’s heart.

The proud become humble.

The bitter become forgiving.

The selfish become generous.

The fearful find hope.

The lost are brought home.

This is the miracle of the new birth.

The new birth is possible because of Jesus Christ.

Only a few verses later, Jesus declares:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

The cross and the resurrection are the foundation of the new birth.

Jesus took our sin upon Himself.

He died the death we deserved.

He rose again in victory.

Through faith in Him, we receive forgiveness, reconciliation with God, and the gift of new life.

Christianity is not merely turning over a new leaf.

It is receiving a new life from the risen Christ.

Perhaps today you recognise yourself in Nicodemus.

You have been searching.

You have questions.

You desire to know God more deeply.

The invitation of Jesus remains open.

Come to Him.

Repent of your sins.

Believe the Gospel.

Trust in Christ alone.

Ask the Father to give you a new heart through the Holy Spirit.

The Good Shepherd delights to receive those who come to Him in faith.

The Shepherd is not calling us merely to become more religious.

He is calling us to become new creations.

The Gospel is not about outward improvement.

It is about inward transformation.

The Lord who formed us in our mother’s womb now offers to make us new by His Spirit.

May we respond with faith.

May we be born again.

And may our lives bear witness to the power of Jesus Christ.

The conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus forces us to look beyond outward religion and examine the condition of our hearts.

Nicodemus knew the Scriptures. He was religious. He held a respected position. Yet Jesus told him that he needed to be born again.

The same question comes to us today.

The Christian life is not simply about knowing the right things, attending the right places, or performing religious duties. It is about receiving new life through the work of the Holy Spirit and trusting in Jesus Christ.

Ask yourself honestly:

  • Is there evidence that the Holy Spirit is transforming my heart and my desires?
  • How has my attitude toward sin changed since I began following Christ?
  • If someone examined the direction of my life, would they see evidence of new life in Christ?

Take some quiet time before God today and ask Him to reveal the true condition of your heart. Do not compare yourself with other Christians or with the outward appearance of religion.

Ask the Lord to show you whether your life is being transformed by His Spirit and to deepen your faith in Jesus Christ.
