The Return of the King: Living Ready for Christ’s Coming

“Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with Me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done.”

Every shepherd leads his flock somewhere.

The flock does not wander aimlessly.

The shepherd knows where he is taking them and leads them toward the place prepared for them.

The Christian journey is also moving toward a promised destination.

Jesus Christ, our Good Shepherd and King, has promised that He will return.

His first coming brought salvation.

His return will bring the fulfilment of God’s kingdom.

The question for every believer is not only:

“Do I believe Christ will return?”

The deeper question is:

“Am I living faithfully while I wait for Him?”

The Shepherd’s flock is called to live with hope, readiness, and purpose.

Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He gave His disciples a promise:

“I will come back and take you to be with Me that you also may be where I am.” – John 14:3

The return of Christ is not a human idea.

It is a promise from the Lord Himself.

The same Jesus who came humbly as the Saviour will return as the victorious King.

Our faith rests on His promises.

The world often lives without hope.

People search for meaning, security, and peace in temporary things.

But believers have a greater hope.

Our future is not ultimately determined by what happens in this world.

Our hope is anchored in Christ.

Paul wrote:

“We wait for the blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ.” –Titus 2:13

The return of Christ reminds us that God’s plan will be completed.

Jesus repeatedly taught His followers to remain watchful.

He said:

“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.” – Matthew 24:42

Readiness does not mean fear.

It means faithful living.

A servant who expects the master’s return continues doing what he has been commanded to do.

A believer who expects Christ’s return continues walking in obedience, love, and faithfulness.

Jesus taught that His followers have been entrusted with responsibilities while they wait.

We are called to use:

  • Our time for God’s purposes.
  • Our gifts for His kingdom.
  • Our resources for His glory.
  • Our lives as a testimony of Christ.

Jesus said:

“Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household?” – Matthew 24:45

The Shepherd has entrusted His flock with a mission until He returns.

Knowing that Christ will return should transform the way we live.

John writes:

“All who have this hope in Him purify themselves, just as He is pure.” – 1 John 3:3

The hope of Christ’s return is not an excuse to ignore the present.

It is a reason to live faithfully today.

The believer who belongs to Christ prepares for eternity by faithfully following Him now.

Jesus said:

“My reward is with Me.”

Our faithfulness does not earn our salvation; it reveals that we belong to Christ and have taken seriously what He has entrusted to us.

God sees every act of faithfulness.

Every prayer.

Every act of service.

Every sacrifice made for His kingdom.

Nothing done for Christ is forgotten. The world may not always recognise faithfulness, but the King sees everything.

The Church lives in a unique time.

Christ has already come.

Christ has already defeated sin and death.

But Christ has not yet returned.

We live between the victory of the cross and the glory of His kingdom.

This means the Church must remain faithful, proclaim the Gospel, and serve the Shepherd until He comes.

Jesus said:

“It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.” – Matthew 24:46

Perhaps today you need to ask yourself an uncomfortable question:

If Christ returned today, would I be ready to meet Him?

Not because you have earned enough.

Not because you have achieved enough.

Not because your life has been perfect.

But because your heart belongs to Him.

Perhaps you have allowed the distractions of life to become more important than Christ.

Perhaps you have become spiritually comfortable.

Perhaps you have been postponing obedience.

Perhaps there is a sin you have been unwilling to surrender.

Perhaps God has given you an opportunity to serve, but you keep waiting for another time.

Perhaps you have forgotten that this life is temporary.

The return of Christ calls us to wake up.

Do not wait for a better season to follow Christ faithfully.

Follow Him today.

Do not wait until you have more time to serve Him.

Use the time you have today.

Do not wait until you have more resources to honour Him.

Use what He has already placed in your hands.

Do not wait until everything is perfect.

Be faithful where God has placed you now.

The King is coming.

Live ready.

When you become distracted, return to the Shepherd.

When you become discouraged, remember His promise.

When you become comfortable with sin, return to holiness.

When you become fearful about the future, return to His Word.

When you become tired of serving, remember that the King sees your faithfulness.

When you feel that your work is insignificant, remember that nothing done for Christ is wasted.

When the world around you feels uncertain, remember that Christ remains Lord.

Your future is not ultimately in the hands of governments, economies, circumstances, or people.

Your future is in the hands of the King.

So remain faithful.

Keep your eyes on Christ.

Keep your heart ready.

Keep serving.

Keep praying.

Keep walking in holiness.

Keep loving His people.

And keep waiting for the day when the Shepherd and King returns.

The Christian life is not simply about where we are going.

It is about how we live while we are waiting to get there.

The King is coming.

Let us be found faithful when He comes.

The Shepherd has promised that He will return. Our responsibility is not to predict the day, but to live faithfully until He comes.

Take a moment to examine your heart honestly.

Ask yourself:

  • Does my daily life reflect readiness for the King?
  • Am I using my time, gifts, opportunities, and resources for God’s purposes?
  • Am I living with hope, or am I allowing fear and the pressures of this world to control me?
  • Is there anything Christ has asked me to do that I have been postponing?

Set aside some quiet time today and pray:

Lord Jesus, show me what needs to change in my life so that I may live faithfully while I wait for You.

Remember:

The King is coming. We do not know the day, but we know the One who is coming. Live faithfully today.
