The Kingdom of God: Living Under the Rule of the Shepherd King
The King Who Rules Now
Main Scripture
Matthew 6:33
“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
The King Who Rules Now
Every kingdom has a ruler.
Every kingdom has a way of life.
Every kingdom has a purpose.
When Jesus came into the world, His message was the announcement of a kingdom.
He proclaimed:
“The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” – Mark 1:15
Jesus did not come only to offer forgiveness.
He came to establish the reign of God in the hearts and lives of His people.
The Shepherd King does not simply rescue His flock from danger.
He leads them into a new way of living under His authority.
The Kingdom Belongs to the King
A kingdom is defined by its king.
The Kingdom of God belongs to Jesus Christ because He is Lord over all creation.
John writes:
“On His robe and on His thigh He has this name written: King of kings and Lord of lords.” – Revelation 19:16
Christ does not compete with other rulers.
His authority is above every power.
To enter God’s Kingdom is to recognise Jesus as King.
The Kingdom Begins Within the Heart
Jesus taught that God’s Kingdom is not merely an external place.
It begins with a transformed heart.
When Jesus was asked about the Kingdom, He said:
“The kingdom of God is in your midst.” – Luke 17:21
God’s reign begins when people surrender themselves to Him.
The question is not only:
“Do I believe Jesus exists?”
The deeper question is:
“Does Jesus rule my life?”
Kingdom Living Requires Surrender
Jesus said:
“Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow Me.” –Luke 9:23
Following the Shepherd King means surrendering our own rule.
Our desires.
Our plans.
Our priorities.
The Kingdom of God cannot be built on a heart that insists on remaining its own king.
Discipleship begins when we place Christ on the throne of our lives.
The Kingdom Has Different Values From the World
The world often measures success by:
- Power.
- Wealth.
- Status.
- Recognition.
But Jesus revealed a different Kingdom.
He said:
“The greatest among you will be your servant.” – Matthew 23:11
In God’s Kingdom:
The humble are lifted.
The servants are honoured.
The weak are cared for.
The greatest example is Christ Himself, who came not to be served but to serve.
Kingdom Citizens Seek God’s Will First
Jesus taught:
“Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness.”
The priority of the believer is not simply asking God to bless our plans.
It is seeking God’s purposes.
Kingdom living means asking:
“Lord, what do You desire?”
“How can my life serve Your mission?”
“How can I represent Your Kingdom today?”
The Shepherd leads His flock according to His purpose.
The Kingdom Produces a Changed Life
When Christ rules, transformation follows.
Paul writes:
“The kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” – Romans 14:17
The Kingdom is seen through:
- Righteousness — living according to God’s ways.
- Peace — trusting God’s leadership.
- Joy — knowing we belong to Him.
A life submitted to the Shepherd King becomes a witness of His Kingdom.
The Kingdom Will One Day Be Fully Revealed
Although God’s Kingdom is already present, it is not yet complete.
One day Christ will return and establish His perfect reign.
Revelation declares:
“The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign forever and ever.” – Revelation 11:15
The believer lives between two realities:
Christ reigns today.
Christ will reign visibly forever.
This gives us confidence and hope.
The Invitation: Let the King Rule
There comes a moment when every believer must examine the throne of the heart.
Who is sitting there?
Is it Christ?
Or have we quietly placed ourselves there?
Perhaps you believe in Jesus but still insist on controlling your future.
Perhaps you pray for God’s blessing but rarely ask for God’s direction.
Perhaps you want Christ to save you from your problems but do not want Him to change your priorities.
Perhaps there is an area of your life where you know God is calling you to surrender, but you have been resisting.
Perhaps it is a relationship.
Perhaps it is your ambition.
Perhaps it is your finances.
Perhaps it is your career.
Perhaps it is your pride.
Perhaps it is unforgiveness.
Perhaps it is a hidden sin.
Perhaps it is simply your desire to remain in control.
The Shepherd King is calling you back to His rule.
Do not give Christ only the parts of your life that are convenient.
Give Him everything.
Let Him lead your decisions.
Let Him shape your priorities.
Let Him correct your thinking.
Let Him transform your character.
Let Him determine the direction of your life.
The King is worthy of complete surrender.
And remember this:
When Christ becomes King, surrender is not loss. It is freedom.
We were never created to carry the burden of being our own king.
We were created to know our Creator, follow our Shepherd, and live under His gracious rule.
Return to the Shepherd
When you are uncertain, seek the Shepherd.
When you are afraid, trust the Shepherd.
When your plans fail, remain with the Shepherd.
When success comes, give Him the glory.
When you are tempted to compromise, remember your King.
When the world tells you to pursue recognition, choose faithfulness.
When the world tells you to pursue power, choose service.
When the world tells you to put yourself first, seek God’s Kingdom first.
When you do not understand what God is doing, trust His wisdom.
When obedience is difficult, remember that the Shepherd knows where He is leading you.
The Kingdom of God is not merely a future promise.
It changes how we live today.
Reflect & Examine
The Shepherd King does not call us merely to believe that He exists.
He calls us to live under His authority.
Take a moment to examine your heart honestly.
Ask yourself:
- Is Jesus truly the King of every area of my life?
- Are my decisions guided by God’s Kingdom or by the values of the world?
- Am I seeking God’s purposes before my own?
- Does my life reflect the values of God’s Kingdom?
- Am I willing to serve others even when I receive no recognition?
Today’s Step
Set aside some quiet time today and pray:
Lord Jesus, show me every area of my life where I am still trying to rule myself. Teach me to surrender completely to You and to seek Your Kingdom first.
Remember:
The Kingdom belongs to the King.
And the King is Jesus.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You that Jesus Christ is our Shepherd King. Help us to live under His rule and surrender every part of our lives to Him. Teach us to seek Your Kingdom above everything else.
Transform our hearts so that our words, actions, and decisions reflect the values of Your Kingdom. May we represent Christ faithfully until the day His Kingdom is fully revealed. In the name of Jesus Christ,
Amen.
“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” — Matthew 6:33
