The Call to Holiness: Becoming Set Apart for God
The Shepherd Calls His Flock to Be Different
Main Scripture
1 Peter 1:15–16
“But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.'”
The Shepherd Calls His Flock to Be Different
A shepherd marks his flock.
The sheep belong to him.
They are under his care.
They follow his voice.
They are separated from the dangers around them because they belong to the shepherd.
In the same way, God calls His people to be set apart for Him.
Holiness does not mean becoming disconnected from the world.
It means belonging completely to God while living faithfully within the world.
The Shepherd does not call His flock merely to believe differently.
He calls them to live differently.
Holiness Begins With God’s Character
Peter writes:
“Be holy, because I am holy.”
The foundation of holiness is not human perfection.
It is the character of God Himself.
God is holy.
He is pure.
He is righteous.
He is completely separated from sin.
Because we belong to Him, we are called to reflect His character.
The purpose of holiness is not to make us appear superior to others.
It is to make God’s nature visible through our lives.
We Are Called and Chosen by God
Holiness begins with our identity.
Peter writes:
“You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession.” – 1 Peter 2:9
Before God calls us to live differently, He reminds us that we belong to Him.
We do not pursue holiness to earn God’s love.
We pursue holiness because we have already received His love.
The Shepherd transforms our identity, and our identity shapes our actions.
Holiness Requires Turning Away From the Old Life
Peter reminds believers:
“Do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.” – 1 Peter 1:14
Following Christ requires leaving behind the ways that separate us from God.
Repentance is not only feeling sorry for sin.
It is turning away from sin and turning toward God.
The Shepherd leads His sheep away from dangerous paths and toward life.
Holiness Is a Daily Walk
Holiness is not a one-time achievement.
It is a lifelong journey of becoming more like Christ.
Paul writes:
“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” – Romans 12:2
God changes us through:
- His Word.
- His Spirit.
- Prayer.
- Obedience.
- Fellowship with His people.
Every day is an opportunity to grow closer to the Shepherd.
Holiness Is Seen Through Our Actions
True holiness is not only about what we avoid.
It is about what we become.
Jesus demonstrated holiness through:
- Love.
- Compassion.
- Forgiveness.
- Humility.
- Service.
A holy life reflects the heart of Christ.
James teaches:
“Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” – James 2:17
The world should be able to see the Shepherd through His flock.
Holiness Prepares Us for God’s Purpose
God does not set people apart to remove them from usefulness.
He sets them apart to use them.
Paul wrote:
“If anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonourable, he will be a vessel for honour, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.” – 2 Timothy 2:21
A clean vessel is ready to be used.
A surrendered life becomes an instrument in God’s hands.
Before the Shepherd sends His flock, He prepares His flock.
Holiness Comes Through the Work of Christ
We must remember that holiness is not achieved through human strength alone.
Christ makes us holy.
The writer of Hebrews says:
“We have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” – Hebrews 10:10
The cross is the foundation of our holiness.
We are not trying to earn acceptance from God through our own holiness.
Through Christ, we are forgiven, justified, and made holy by His grace.
The Invitation: Choose the Holy Path
There comes a moment when every believer must examine the direction of their life.
It is possible to believe in Christ while still holding onto patterns that He is calling us to leave behind.
Perhaps there is a habit you know is not pleasing to God.
Perhaps there is bitterness that you have carried for years.
Perhaps there is dishonesty that you have learned to justify.
Perhaps there is a relationship that continually pulls you away from Christ.
Perhaps there is something you secretly watch, read, or pursue that you would not want others to see.
Perhaps pride has become so familiar that you no longer recognise it.
Perhaps you have become comfortable with a compromise that once troubled your conscience.
The question is not whether everyone else is doing it.
The question is:
Is this pleasing to my Shepherd?
Holiness sometimes requires difficult decisions.
It may require saying no when everyone else says yes.
It may require walking away when staying would be easier.
It may require confessing what you have hidden.
It may require asking someone for forgiveness.
It may require forgiving someone who hurt you.
It may require changing the people, places, habits, or influences that continually pull you away from God.
Do not confuse God’s patience with God’s approval.
When the Holy Spirit reveals something that needs to change, listen.
The Shepherd is not calling you into a life of misery.
He is calling you into a life of freedom.
Sin promises freedom but produces slavery.
Christ calls us to holiness because He knows the path that leads to life.
Choose the path of the Shepherd.
Return to the Shepherd
When temptation becomes strong, return to the Shepherd.
When you have fallen, repent and return to the Shepherd.
When you feel weak, depend upon the Shepherd.
When the world pressures you to compromise, listen to the Shepherd.
When you are misunderstood because you choose obedience, remain with the Shepherd.
When you are tempted to seek approval from people, remember whose approval matters most.
When you are angry, ask the Shepherd to control your words.
When you are wounded, ask the Shepherd to heal your heart.
When you are successful, give the Shepherd the glory.
When you are corrected by God’s Word, receive His correction.
When you are uncertain, seek His direction.
When you are tempted to return to an old path, remember where that path leads.
Holiness is not about becoming someone who never struggles.
It is about becoming someone who continually returns to Christ.
Keep walking with Him.
Reflect & Examine
The Shepherd does not call us merely to believe that He is holy.
He calls us to reflect His holiness through our lives.
Take a moment to examine your heart honestly.
Ask yourself:
- Does my life reflect that I belong to God?
- Are there areas where I am still following the patterns of the world?
- Am I allowing God to transform my thoughts and desires?
- Does my character reflect Jesus to those around me?
- Am I pursuing holiness through God’s grace rather than my own strength?
Today’s Step
Set aside some quiet time today and pray:
Lord Jesus, search my heart and show me anything that does not honour You. Give me the courage to turn away from sin and the strength to walk in obedience. Make me holy through Your grace and the work of Your Spirit. Shape my character so that my life reflects You and becomes useful for Your purposes.
Remember:
You belong to God.
You are called to holiness.
You do not walk this path alone.
The Shepherd is with you.
Follow Him.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for calling us to belong to You. Thank You that through Jesus Christ we have been forgiven, restored, and set apart for Your purposes. Help us pursue holiness not through our own strength but through the power of Your Spirit.
Transform our hearts, our thoughts, and our actions. Make our lives a reflection of Christ so that others may see Your goodness through us. Prepare us to faithfully serve Your Kingdom and follow our Shepherd wherever He leads. In the name of Jesus Christ,
Amen.
