The Great Commission: The Shepherd Sends His Flock Into the World

“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'”

A shepherd does not gather sheep without purpose.

He leads them.

He protects them.

He cares for them.

But he also guides them toward the purpose for which they were created.

Throughout this journey, we have seen the heart of the Shepherd.

He called us.

He restored us.

He transformed us.

He strengthened us.

Now we see the final purpose:

The Shepherd sends His flock into the world.

Jesus did not save us only from something.

He saved us for something.

We have been called to know Christ, follow Christ, become like Christ, and make Christ known.

Before Jesus gave the command to go, He declared:

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.”

The mission of the Church is not built on human ability.

It is built on Christ’s authority.

We do not go because we are powerful.

We go because our Shepherd is powerful.

The One who sends us is the King of kings and Lord of lords.

Jesus commanded:

“Go and make disciples of all nations.”

Notice that Jesus did not simply say:

“Go and make believers.”

He said:

“Make disciples.”

A disciple is someone who:

  • Learns from Christ.
  • Follows Christ.
  • Obeys Christ.
  • Becomes more like Christ.

The mission is not only to introduce people to Jesus.

It is to help people grow as followers of Jesus.

Jesus said:

“All nations.”

The Shepherd’s heart reaches every people group.

Every language.

Every culture.

Every background.

The Gospel is not limited to one nation or one generation.

God’s desire is that people from every corner of the earth would know Him.

John saw this vision:

“A great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb.” – Revelation 7:9

The Shepherd is gathering His worldwide flock.

Jesus commanded:

“Teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”

The mission is not based on human opinions.

It is based on the truth of God’s Word.

The Church is called to faithfully teach:

  • The character of God.
  • The Gospel of Christ.
  • The truth of Scripture.
  • The way of discipleship.

A shepherd feeds the flock.

In the same way, God’s people must be nourished by His truth.

Jesus said:

“Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” – Matthew 4:4

The Great Commission was not given only to pastors, missionaries, or church leaders.

It was given to the disciples of Christ.

Every believer has been called to represent Jesus.

Some preach.

Some teach.

Some serve.

Some encourage.

Some support.

Some pray.

But every follower of Christ is part of the Shepherd’s mission.

Peter writes:

“You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.” – 1 Peter 2:9

The Great Commission can seem impossible.

The world is large.

The challenges are great.

But Jesus gives the greatest promise:

“Surely I am with you always.”

The mission depends not on our strength.

It depends on His presence.

The same Shepherd who called us walks with us.

The same Shepherd who transformed us empowers us.

The same Shepherd who saved us sends us.

The ultimate goal of the Great Commission is not simply increasing numbers.

It is glorifying God.

A faithful flock displays the goodness of its Shepherd.

Jesus said:

“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16

Our lives should point people toward Christ.

Our words should point people toward Christ.

Our actions should point people toward Christ.

There comes a moment when the message of the Gospel must move from our hearts to our hands.

We can study Scripture without sharing it.

We can hear sermons without making disciples.

We can attend church without serving the mission.

We can speak about Christ without actually living for Christ.

But Jesus says:

“Go.”

The command is simple.

The calling is serious.

The opportunity is before us.

You do not have to reach the entire world.

You have to be faithful where God has placed you.

The Shepherd is responsible for the harvest.

Our responsibility is faithful obedience.

God can use one surrendered life to influence many others.

The question is not:

“Can I change the whole world?”

The question is:

“Am I willing to let the Shepherd use me?”

The Shepherd says:

Go.

But going does not mean leaving the Shepherd behind.

We go with Him.

When you serve, stay close to the Shepherd.

When you teach, stay close to the Shepherd.

When you evangelise, stay close to the Shepherd.

When you disciple others, stay close to the Shepherd.

When you face opposition, stay close to the Shepherd.

When you experience success, stay close to the Shepherd.

When you are tired, return to the Shepherd.

When you fail, return to the Shepherd.

The mission is not a replacement for relationship with Christ.

The mission flows from relationship with Christ.

We do not go because we have finished needing the Shepherd.

We go because we belong to Him.

The Shepherd sends His flock, but He remains with His flock.

The Shepherd does not call us merely to complete a thirty-day journey.

He calls us to continue following Him and to participate in His mission.

Take a moment to examine your heart honestly.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I willing to make Christ known where God has placed me?
  • Am I faithfully representing Christ through my words and actions?
  • What gifts, resources, abilities, or opportunities has God already placed in my hands?
  • What is one step of obedience I will take after completing this journey?

Set aside some quiet time today and pray:

Lord Jesus,

Thank You for allowing me to be part of Your flock and for giving my life a purpose greater than myself. Help me not to keep the Gospel only within my own heart. Give me courage to speak about You. Give me wisdom to teach Your truth. Give me humility to serve. Give me compassion for those who do not yet know You. Show me where You are sending me and give me the courage to go.

Remember:

Go where He sends you.

Say what He gives you to say.

Do what He calls you to do.

And remain close to the Shepherd.
