If You Love Me, Keep My Commandments
Love for Christ Is Revealed Through Obedience
Main Scripture
John 14:15
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.”
Love That Follows the Shepherd
Throughout Scripture, God reveals that He desires more than outward religious actions.
He desires the heart.
Many people view obedience to God as a burden or a restriction.
But Jesus shows us a different perspective.
Obedience is not the way we earn God’s love.
Obedience is the response of those who have already received His love.
A sheep follows the shepherd because it trusts the shepherd.
In the same way, a disciple follows Christ because he knows the goodness and faithfulness of the One who leads.
Love for Christ is revealed through a life that listens to His voice and follows His ways.
Obedience Begins With Love
Jesus said:
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.”
Notice the order.
Jesus does not say:
“Keep My commandments so that I will love you.”
He says:
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.”
True obedience flows from a heart that loves God.
When we understand Christ’s sacrifice, His mercy, and His grace, obedience becomes our response of gratitude.
The Shepherd does not force His flock to follow.
He draws them through His love.
Jesus Is the Perfect Example of Obedience
Christ did not only teach obedience.
He demonstrated it.
Jesus said:
“I have come down from heaven not to do My will but to do the will of Him who sent Me.” – (John 6:38)
Even when obedience led Him to the cross, Jesus remained faithful to the Father’s will.
In the Garden of Gethsemane, He prayed:
“Not My will, but Yours be done.” – (Luke 22:42)
The Shepherd King showed us what complete surrender looks like.
Obedience Reveals Who We Follow
Jesus asked an important question:
“Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” – (Luke 6:46)
Words alone do not prove our devotion to Christ.
A person may claim to follow Jesus, but true discipleship is revealed through obedience.
Following the Shepherd means allowing His Word to shape our choices, priorities, and actions.
The voice we obey reveals the master we follow.
God’s Commands Are Given for Our Good
Some people see God’s commands as limitations.
But God’s instructions are expressions of His love.
A good shepherd sets boundaries because he knows the dangers his sheep face.
In the same way, God’s commands protect us and guide us into what is good.
Moses told Israel:
“Walk in obedience to all that the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper.” – (Deuteronomy 5:33)
God’s ways lead to life.
The Holy Spirit Helps Us Obey
God does not command us to follow Him without providing help.
The same Spirit who gives us a new heart also strengthens us to live in obedience.
Jesus promised:
“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever.” – (John 14:16)
The Christian life is not about trying harder in our own strength.
It is about walking with God and allowing His Spirit to work within us.
Obedience Is a Lifelong Journey
Following Christ is not about achieving perfection overnight.
It is a journey of growth.
There will be moments when we fail, but the Shepherd continues to correct, restore, and guide His people.
What matters is a heart that remains willing to follow Him.
The desire of every believer should be the same as the Psalmist:
“Teach me, Lord, the way of Your decrees, that I may follow it to the end.” – (Psalm 119:33)
Obedience Is Tested When It Costs Us
It is easy to obey when obedience is convenient.
The real test comes when obedience costs us something.
What happens when doing what is right costs us money?
What happens when telling the truth damages our reputation?
What happens when forgiving someone means giving up our desire for revenge?
What happens when following Christ means being misunderstood?
What happens when God’s Word challenges something we have always believed or practiced?
These moments reveal whether Christ is truly Lord of our lives.
The Invitation
Perhaps today you need to ask yourself a difficult but important question:
Do I truly love Jesus, or do I simply love the idea of being a Christian?
There is a difference.
Loving Christ means wanting Him to be Lord.
It means allowing His Word to correct us.
It means surrendering areas of our lives that we have tried to keep under our own control.
It means trusting His wisdom above our own desires.
Perhaps there is something God has already shown you that you need to obey.
Do not wait for another revelation.
Obey what you already know.
Do not allow pride to keep you from obedience.
Do not allow fear to keep you from obedience.
Do not allow the opinions of people to become more important than the voice of God.
The Shepherd is calling.
And the question is not merely:
“Do I know His voice?”
The question is:
“Will I follow?”
Return to the Shepherd
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.”
These words are simple.
But they reach deeply into the heart of discipleship.
Love must become obedience.
Faith must become action.
Grace must produce transformation.
And following Christ must become a way of life.
Reflect & Examine
Obedience begins in the heart before it becomes visible in our actions.
Take a moment to examine your heart honestly.
Ask yourself:
- Do I genuinely love Christ, or have I reduced Christianity to religious activity?
- Is my obedience motivated by love and gratitude, or by fear and the desire to earn God’s approval?
- Do my daily choices demonstrate that Jesus is truly Lord of my life?
- Am I allowing the Holy Spirit to strengthen me when obedience is difficult?
Today’s Step
Ask God to show you one area where He is calling you to obedience.
Then take that step.
Remember:
You do not obey to earn the Shepherd’s love. You obey because you have received His love.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for showing us Your love through Jesus Christ. Help us understand that Your commands are not burdens but expressions of Your perfect wisdom and care. Give us hearts that love You deeply and lives that reflect that love through obedience.
Forgive us when we choose our own ways instead of following Your voice. Strengthen us through Your Holy Spirit so that we may faithfully walk with our Shepherd each day. May our obedience bring honour and glory to the name of Jesus Christ.
Amen.
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.” — John 14:15
