Christ Alone

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

As we continue our journey through The Shepherd’s Mandate, we arrive at one of the most profound declarations ever spoken by our Lord Jesus Christ.

These words were spoken on the night before His crucifixion.

The disciples were troubled.

Jesus had told them that He would soon leave them, and their hearts were filled with uncertainty and fear.

Thomas asked the question that many people still ask today:

“Lord, we do not know where You are going. How can we know the way?”

Jesus answered with words that have echoed throughout history:

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

This is not merely a statement.

It is the very heart of the Gospel.

Jesus was not simply giving His disciples directions.

He was revealing who He is.

The world offers many paths, many philosophies, and many religious traditions.

But Jesus does not present Himself as one option among many.

He presents Himself as the Way.

The Shepherd who calls us to follow Him is also the Shepherd who leads us to the Father.

He does not merely show us the way.

He is the Way.

Jesus does not say:

“I will show you a way.”

Nor does He say:

“I know the truth.”

He says:

“I am.”

These words are deeply significant.

When God revealed Himself to Moses at the burning bush, He declared:

“I AM WHO I AM.”

Jesus uses the same divine language to reveal His identity.

He is not merely pointing us toward the path.

He is the Way.

He is not merely explaining truth.

He is the Truth.

He is not merely offering life.

He is the Life.

Everything humanity ultimately seeks: reconciliation with God, truth, forgiveness, purpose, and eternal life is found in Him.

This is why the words of Jesus cannot be reduced to a religious teaching or a moral philosophy.

They are a declaration of His identity.

The Shepherd is not simply showing His sheep where to go.

The Shepherd Himself is the Way home.

Since the fall of Adam and Eve, humanity has searched for a way back to God.

Some have trusted in good works.

Others have trusted in religious ceremonies, traditions, philosophy, wealth, or human achievement.

But none of these can remove the separation caused by sin.

Scripture tells us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

Sin separated us from our Creator.

But God did not leave humanity without hope.

He sent His Son.

Through His perfect life, His sacrificial death, and His glorious resurrection, Jesus opened the way for sinners to be reconciled to God.

Paul writes that there is one mediator between God and mankind: Christ Jesus.

Jesus is therefore not one way among many.

He is the only Way because He alone can reconcile us to the Father.

The Shepherd does not point His flock toward many possible paths.

He calls us to follow Him.

And when we follow Christ, we are following the only Way that leads us home to God.

Jesus tells us that He is not merely a teacher of truth.

He is the Truth.

We live in a world where truth is often treated as something personal and relative.

One person has their truth.

Another person has a different truth.

But Jesus does not present truth as an opinion.

Truth is found in a Person.

Jesus Christ is the Truth.

Every promise of God finds its fulfilment in Him.

Every prophecy ultimately points us toward Him.

And Scripture reveals who He is and what He has done.

When we know Christ, we do not merely possess information about God.

We come to know the One who reveals God to us.

This is why our faith must not be built upon human opinion, changing traditions, or personal feelings.

It must be built upon the truth God has revealed through His Son and His Word.

The Shepherd’s voice does not lead us into confusion.

He leads us into truth.

Humanity longs for life.

Not merely existence, but a life filled with meaning, hope, and lasting purpose.

Yet sin brought death into the world and separated humanity from God.

Jesus came to overcome that separation.

Through His death and resurrection, Christ conquered death and opened the way to eternal life.

Jesus declared:

“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me will live, even though they die.”

Eternal life is not simply something we receive after death.

When we come to Christ, new life begins now.

He transforms our hearts.

He renews our minds.

He gives us hope in suffering and strength to persevere.

The Christian life is not merely about preparing for heaven.

It is about walking with the risen Christ today.

The Shepherd who gives us life is the same Shepherd who leads us, protects us, and remains with us.

In Christ, we do not simply find a better life. We find Life itself.

Perhaps today you are searching for peace.

Searching for purpose.

Searching for forgiveness.

Searching for certainty.

The world offers many answers, but Jesus does not simply offer us something.

He offers us Himself.

He invites every weary and searching soul to come to Him.

He alone can forgive our sins.

He alone can reconcile us to the Father.

He alone can give us eternal life.

The Shepherd is still calling.

His invitation is simple:

Come to Him.

Trust in Him.

Follow Him.

We do not need to understand everything before we come.

We do not need to make ourselves worthy before we come.

We come to Christ because He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

And when we come to Him, we do not walk alone.

The Shepherd who calls us is the Shepherd who leads us.

The Shepherd who called us to return now reveals Himself as the only Way home to the Father.

The world offers countless paths.

Jesus offers Himself.

He does not ask us to place our hope in religious performance, human wisdom, traditions, or our own ability to save ourselves.

He calls us to trust Him.

He is the Way because He alone brings us to the Father.

He is the Truth because He reveals who God is and what is true.

He is the Life because He alone gives us reconciliation with God and the promise of eternal life.

Every generation must answer the same question:

Who is Jesus?

May we not only confess the truth with our lips, but build our lives upon it.

May we follow Christ faithfully, trust Him completely, and hold firmly to Him alone.

Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

To Him alone be all glory forever.

Amen.

Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

His words leave no room for divided trust. If Christ is truly the only Way to the Father, then our hope must rest in Him alone.

Ask yourself honestly:

  • Am I allowing the truth of Christ to shape my beliefs and decisions?

Today, take a few quiet moments to place your trust in Christ alone.

Bring before Him one area where you have been relying on your own strength, understanding, achievements, traditions, or ability.

Surrender it to Him in prayer.

Then take one practical step that demonstrates your trust in Jesus as the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Do not simply admire Christ today.

Follow Him.
