The Cost and Reward of Discipleship
Following Christ Costs Us Everything, But Gives Us Life
Main Scripture
Luke 9:23–25
“Then He said to them all, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?'”
The Call to Follow
Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus never hid the cost of following Him.
He did not promise His disciples an easy road, a life free from hardship, or the approval of the world. Instead, He spoke plainly about sacrifice, commitment, and perseverance.
Many people are willing to admire Jesus.
Many are willing to learn about Jesus.
But true discipleship requires something greater.
It requires surrender.
To follow Christ is not simply to accept certain beliefs. It is to place Him above every ambition, every possession, every relationship, and every personal desire. It is a daily decision to trust His will above our own.
Yet while discipleship carries a cost, it also carries a reward beyond anything this world can offer.
Counting the Cost
Jesus invited everyone to come to Him, but He also urged people to count the cost.
He compared discipleship to a builder who first calculates the expense before constructing a tower and to a king who considers whether he is prepared for battle.
The Lord wanted people to understand that following Him is not an emotional decision made for a single moment.
It is a lifelong commitment.
There will be times when obedience requires sacrifice.
There will be moments when following Christ means standing against the opinions of the world.
There may even be seasons of rejection, suffering, or persecution.
The Christian life was never meant to be comfortable.
It was meant to be faithful.
Taking Up the Cross
When Jesus said, “Take up your cross daily,” His listeners understood exactly what He meant.
The cross was a symbol of death.
It represented complete surrender.
To take up our cross does not mean simply enduring life’s difficulties.
It means dying to our own selfish desires so that Christ may live through us.
Each day we are called to choose His will over our own.
We forgive when it is difficult.
We remain faithful when obedience is costly.
We speak the truth with love, even when it is unpopular.
We serve others instead of seeking our own glory.
This daily surrender shapes us into the image of our Saviour.
The Reward of Following Christ
Although discipleship requires sacrifice, Jesus never asks us to give up something without offering something infinitely greater.
He promises forgiveness for our sins.
He promises His presence through every trial.
He promises peace that surpasses understanding.
He promises eternal life with Him.
The Apostle Paul understood this truth.
After enduring persecution, imprisonment, hardship, and suffering, he declared:
“I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”
The rewards of following Christ are not measured by earthly success.
They are measured by an eternal inheritance that can never fade away.
Whatever we surrender for Christ cannot compare with what we receive through Him.
The Invitation
Every believer must ask an honest question:
Am I following Jesus only when it is convenient?
Or:
Am I willing to follow Him wherever He leads?
There is a difference between admiring Jesus and following Jesus.
There is a difference between knowing about Christ and surrendering our lives to Christ.
There is a difference between carrying the name Christian and living as a disciple.
Jesus is not looking for people who will follow Him only when the road is easy.
He calls us to follow Him when the road is difficult.
Perhaps there is something in your life that God is asking you to surrender.
Perhaps it is an ambition.
Perhaps it is a relationship.
Perhaps it is an attitude.
Perhaps it is unforgiveness.
Perhaps it is fear.
Perhaps it is pride.
Perhaps it is a desire for control.
Perhaps it is something that you know God has already asked you to leave behind.
Do not allow fear to keep you from obedience.
Do not allow comfort to become more important than faithfulness.
Do not allow the opinions of people to become more important than the voice of God.
The Shepherd is calling.
Will you follow?
Return to the Shepherd
Jesus never promised that following Him would be easy.
He promised that it would be worth it.
The cost of discipleship is real.
But the reward is eternal.
One day every believer will stand before the Lord and hear the words:
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
There is no greater reward than to know Christ, to walk with Him faithfully, and to spend eternity in His presence.
May we never shrink back from the path of discipleship, but gladly take up our cross each day, trusting the Good Shepherd who leads us into everlasting life.
Reflect & Examine
Following Christ requires more than words. It requires surrender, obedience, and perseverance.
Take a moment to examine your heart honestly.
Ask yourself:
- Am I following Jesus only when obedience is convenient?
- Have comfort, possessions, reputation, relationships, or personal ambition become more important to me than obedience to Jesus?
- Am I willing to follow Christ even when His path is difficult?
- Do I trust the Shepherd when I do not understand where He is leading?
- Am I living for temporary rewards or keeping my eyes fixed on eternity?
Today’s Step
Identify one area of your life that you have been holding back from Christ. Surrender it to Him today and choose one practical act of obedience.
Remember:
The cost of discipleship is temporary, but the reward of following Christ is eternal.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for calling us to follow Your Son, Jesus Christ. Give us the courage to deny ourselves, take up our cross daily, and remain faithful no matter the cost.
Strengthen us through Your Holy Spirit when the journey is difficult, and keep our eyes fixed on the eternal reward You have prepared for those who love You. May our lives reflect wholehearted devotion to our Good Shepherd. In Jesus name,
Amen.
